The Reformation had a profound impact on the development of modern Christianity. The Reformation impacted many areas including theology, social structures, and politics. The Reformation which began in the early 16th century was sparked by Martin Luther and his 95 Theses. This is probably one of the most impactful and important events in the last thousand years for modern Christianity. From this spark modern Christianity made incredible theological developments and many reformers stepped up to lead the charge. This led to many denominations but one core foundation of these denominations is the importance of Scripture. The ultimate authority in matters of faith is Scripture. This is a core foundation that Protestants can stand on, which is the authority of Scripture. Another foundation that came from the Reformation is justification by faith and not by works. While a believer’s life will have works, works are not the cause of salvation but rather the effect of salvation. Today in many Protestant churches there is an emphasis on preaching of God’s Word and faith. Before the Reformation the Catholic Church was the center of religion in Europe. After the Reformation, the emphasis shifted towards the believer and an individual’s relationship with Christ.
Another impact that the Reformation has had on modern Christianity is education. A thrust of the Reformation was translating the scripture into vernacular languages so that common people could read the Bible. This led to higher literacy rates and critical thinking when it comes to the Bible. This is carried on to today in many Protestant denominations. There is an emphasis on the study of Scripture and not just following traditions and customs, but investigating the text of the Bible yourself. Many Protestant churches today will have spiritual formation classes or Bible studies. Personally, it is in the study of scripture that I have felt closest to the Lord. Knowing more about what the Lord has said will help you be closer to him. A church that knows God’s word and lives it out is a church that can have an impact wherever they are.
